Assistant Chief Instructor Don and Sr. Head Instructor Cheri started their kempo career with
Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association
They trained with 3 time World Champion,
Assistant Professor Garland Johnson
, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
They also trained under the prestigious and famous
Grand Master Martin T. Buell
of Oahu, Hawaii.
After moving to Everett, Washington, Don and Cheri continued their training in the
Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association system with Head Instructor Alex Weinert
and had to drive 50 miles per day for that training; really proving their commitment
to KEMPO. After earning their Black Belts from Grand Master Buell and
Assistant Professor Johnson, Don and Cheri were authorized to open the Lake Union
and Mukilteo Branches of the Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association.
Assistant Chief Instructor Don's interest in the martial arts was sparked in his
youth hearing stories about Judo classes from his father. Later he joined the
Army and fell in love with hand-to-hand combat training and earned an Instructor rating.
While stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington, the Army offered an after-hours
Judo class where he learned how to get pounded into the ground and come up smiling.
The Army transferred Don to Ft. Sam Huston, Texas, for advanced battlefield
medical training. While there, he trained in "The Street Survival System"
and was awarded a Brown Belt.
After his Army service, Assistant Chief Instructor Don moved to Colorado Springs
where he studied Tai Kun Tao Kung Fu, earning a Red Sash. It was in Colorado
Springs that he met and worked with Assistant Professor Johnson, Assistant
Professor Manegdeg and Assistant Professor Levett of Universal Kempo-Karate Schools Association.
When the Kung Fu school that Don was attending suddenly closed, Assistant Professor Johnson
invited Don and Cheri into the Universal Kempo Family. "When we attended the first Kempo
class with Assistant Professor Johnson, it felt like home! We finally found a system that
contained the values we had always looked for.
Sr. Head Instructor Cheri started training with Assistant Professor Johnson on
the recommendations of her husband and loved the family orientation and total
safety of the Universal System. When asked what she liked best about the Universal
System she said "This is something my whole family can do together and both my boys
love it as much as I do." As an active parent you have to make room in life for
the important things and so Cheri jumped into the Universal Kempo-Karate "pool"
and loved the Confidants and Self-Respect that developed in the boys and her.
Living in the Springs and having no relatives around, Don and Cheri felt very isolated.
The Universal Kempo family adopted our family and we were no longer alone!
Over the years Don had researched many martial arts systems and trained with some
good ones, but Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association stands alone in the
quality of Instructions and integrity of the leaders.
In March 2007, Don and Cheri went to China with Grand Master Buell to train in Dengfeng, birth place of Shaolin Kung Fu.
We would never have had such unique experiences without the Universal system. Universal
Kempo-Karate Schools is our Martial Arts Home forever!"
